Coder, lecturer & writer, Helen Steer, along with her coder and maker peer, Rehanna Al-Soltane, introduce the world of coding. As they describe how to bring a robot car to 'life' with code, they reveal the important distinction between software and hardware.

In this video Dr. Jasper de Goeij, sponge specialist, explains the role of sponges and how they act as water filters through their tissues like sieves. To feed, sponges strip out bacteria from the water column and return phosphates and nitrates that in turn are consumed by corals.

Nekton is an independent research institute working in collaboration with the University of Oxford, its aim is to help change our knowledge and understanding of the world’s oceans to speed up the protection and governance of our last great wilderness, the deep ocean.

First Descent is a series of expeditions combining innovations in technology, AI, big data and communications, in a bold bid to accelerate the scientific exploration and conservation of the Indian Ocean, the world’s least explored and least protected ocean. Submarine Live gives primary and secondary school students the opportunity to interact with scientists and explorers from the Nekton expedition live from the Seychelles ocean territory.

Arctic Live gives primary and secondary school students around the world teh opportunity to interact with the Encounter Edu expedition team live from the UK Arctic Research Station in Ny-Ålesund, on the Svalbard archipelago.

This year, researchers from the University of Exeter and Plymouth Marine Laboratory will be monitoring and measuring the impact of ocean microplastics and ocean acidification and share the results of their fieldwork with thousands of students globally.

The SHP Film making Club aimed to promote social inclusion and to encourage participants (mostly homeless people) to become filmmakers themselves. I was responsible, together with the Arts Development Manager, for mentoring the participants throughout the different stages of the film production such as scriptwriting, story-boarding, camera work, lighting, audio and video editing. Since the beginning of the project we produced three movies fully conceived and directed by the participants and I was in charge of the video editing for all of them:
To Be Frank (2010), selected to screen on the Community Channel and the East End Film Festival.
Not suitable for children (2011), selected to screen at the British Film Institute.
Mongrel Country (2014), selected to screen at the Outsider Film Festival.

The Latin American community of London has very limited access to health services. According to the report ‘No Longer Invisible’ (2011) 1 in 5 Latin Americans are not registered with a GP. Recent studies of new HIV diagnosis in London show that “since 2005 there has been a notable increase of South Americans newly diagnosed with HIV in the UK” (HPA, 2011).

“Let’s Stop HIV” is a response to the raise of new HIV infections among Latin Americans, run by CLAUK in partnership with Naz Latina. This Informative and community HIV testing campaign was carried out as part of the charities work towards improving Latin Americans access to health services.

Code Smart is a computing and robotics education programme based on driverless car technologies. Students will develop their ability to code as well as their design thinking as they tackle smart city challenges. Through a series of nine lessons, students will learn about aspects of making, programming and design thinking as they build and program their own robot cars.

Code Smart takes students on a journey from complete beginners to code creators. Along the way, students are provided with real-world links opening up a range of possible STEM careers.

This activity book introduces teachers, families and children to the science of the Catlin Arctic Survey. The Survey conducted exploratory research into changes in the Arctic Ocean between 2009 and 2011, both from a static Ice Base and through an explorer team crossing the frozen Arctic Ocean for weeks at a time.

This book develops young people’s understanding both of the Arctic and what it takes to explore the remote north. Through using the activities in this book, young people will discover more about how to train like an explorer, what is needed to keep warm in sub-zero conditions, the life that might be encountered in the Arctic and what you need to eat to get enough energy on your polar expedition.

Many Latin Americans experience extremely poor working conditions due to absence of regulations and exploitative practices in various areas of UK’s labour market. This situation is especially problematic in the cleaning and catering sectors, where much of the Latin American community is currently employed. Working out of office hours, many times in isolation, makes it extremely difficult for Latin American workers to access information about their rights and access justice.

As part of the campaign “Know Your Labour Rights”, The Coalition of Latin Americans in the UK (CLAUK) created this guide in collaboration with the Southwark Law Center, with the support of Unite the Union, to provide information to Latin American workers about their employment rights, as well as about the equality and discrimination legislation in the UK. 

This guide has been produced in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

Migrant women who are victims of gender based violence should be able to access safety, care and justice without fear of destitution, detention or deportation. Insecure legal status is often a tool of control used by perpetrators to abuse their partners and threat them with deportation. This situation put migrant women in a vulnerable position: they fear the abuser and also fear asking for help.

This report is part of Step Up Migrant Women, a campaign led by migrant and black and minority ethnic (BME) women, which aims to secure safe-reporting mechanisms for victims of crime with insecure immigration status and to end data-sharing policies when victims approach the police.

The Nekton Mission consists of six research cruises in six distinct bioregions of the Indian Ocean from West (Mozambique Channel and Seychelles), to Central (Mauritius and Maldives) and East (Andaman and Sumatra). The Mission combines four major activities – scientific research, capacity development, advancement of policy, and public engagement - to deliver the greatest coordinated impact. The Mission will conclude with a State of the Indian Ocean Summit in November 2021. The Mission has been endorsed by International Indian Ocean Expedition 2 (IIOE-2), part of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (UNESCO-IOC).

It is widely recognised that the UK housing market is dysfunctional. The problems are not limited to affordability and the mismatch between supply and demand. Equally important are the kinds of new housing produced by the speculative volume building model, and the communities and neighbourhoods that result. In the real world, the quantity, quality, location, density and price of housing are intimately bound up with how people live and relate to their neighbours and the resources that their homes consume.

Cohousing could play a key role in solving the crisis. Cohousing usually includes private individual or family homes, which may be owned or rented, clustered around spaces and facilities that are collectively used. Food is often a focus, with community food production and/or a common house for shared meals. The communities generally have non-hierarchical structures and decision-making processes, and are usually designed, planned and managed by the residents.
